Central Peru 1: La Merced – San Ramón – Oxapampa – Villa Rica and Satipo Road

If we talk about species, this is the most important route to take. We will begin by Central Highway up to Central Jungle in Perú, from this point we will visit La Merced, San Ramón, Oxapampa and Villa Rica, which has developed his economical activities based on Coffee Plantations, then we will visit Oxapampa with its Cloudy Forest, also we will visit the famous Satipo Road with its elfin forest and finally we will have the opportunity to visit the Pajonal de Puna near the Comas town.

Returning from Concepción to Lima we will visit Santa Eulalia Valley taking the variation of Marcopomacocha on the Central Highway arriving to a dry valley near Lima where we will find beautiful endemics, this trip is really fascinating.

Day 0.    Arrival to Lima

Reception at the Jorge Chavez Airport in Lima and transfer to the Hotel. Briefing. Overnight at the hotel of your preference in Lima.

Day 1.    Lima – La Merced

Early departure in the morning taking the Central Highway to La Merced.We will enjoy this stretch watching beautiful views and excellent birds, then we will ascent by Central Highway where we will be able to watch species like Great Inca-Finch(E), Long-tailed Mockingbirds, Scrub Blackbird, Andean Flicker, Band-tailed Seedeater, Slender-billed Miner, Taczanowski’s Ground-tyrant, Black Siskin, Ash-breasted Sierra-Finch, Plain-breasted Earthcreeper and the rare White-bellied Cinclodes (E), among others.  We will make several stops during the route. In the afternoon we will be arriving to La Merced. Stay overnight in a comfortable hotel in La Merced. (B, BL, D).

Day 2.    San Ramón – Oxapampa

Early in the morning we will begin our trip. We will watch excellent birds in the river sorrounding area and also on the mountain paths near to the city where exist fruit plantations. We will be able to watch species like Plain Antvireo, Social Flycatcher, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Bronze-green Euphonia, Orange-breasted Falcon, Round-tailed Manakin, Yellow-rumped Cacique, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Paradise Tanager, Golden Tanager. Return at mid-morning to have breakfast at the hotel, the immediate departure to Oxapampa, this is a German inmigrants town that keep many of their habits. On the route to Oxapampa we will be able to watch species like the endemic Inca Flycatcher (E), Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Lanceolated Monklet, Blackish Pewee, Peruvian Tyrannulet. Stay overnight in a comfortable hotel in Oxapampa city. (B, BL, D).

Day 3.    Oxapampa, Road to Antena and sorroundings

The elfin forests adjacent to the road take us to Antena the habitat of the Cloud-forest Screech-Owl, we will go for it at dawn, we expect to be lucky.

We will be able to watch other associated species to this kind of forest  like Bay Antpitta, Black-winged Parrot, Barred Parakeet, Scaly-naped Parrot, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Strong-billed Woodcreeper, Andean Guan, Collared Inca, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Peruvian Wren(E), Grass-green Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Long-tailed Antbird, White-crowned Tapaculo.

In the afternoon, we will travel to Pozuzo, by the highway and we will go across the Yanachaga Chemillen National Park, in the way to Pozuzo we will watch several species as Blue-headed Macaw, Blue-headed Parrot, Gilded Barbet and we will seek the Andean Cock-of-the-rock. Stay overnight in a comfortable familiar lodge in Oxapampa. (B, BL, D).

Day 4.    Oxapampa – Pozuzo – Oxapampa

We will spend almost the entire day to bird watch the sorroundings of the Yanachaga Chemillen National Park, first we will go to the lek of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, then we will go deep into the National Park trail.

The Park protects several ecosystems in an altitude range between 300 up to 4000 msnm, including lowland rainforest, bosque premontano, bosque montano y fragmentos de pajonal de puna, we move in a range between 1000 and 1500 meters above the sea level in trails near the main Highway, here we can watch species like Mottle backed Elaenia, Blue-headed Macaw, Cinammon-faced Tyrannulet, Black-faced Dacnis, Purple Honeycreeper, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Ashy-headed Tyrannulet, Paradise Tanager,  Black-and-Chestnut Eagle, Peruvian Tyrannulet, Lemon-browed Flycatcher, Speckled Chachalaca, Gilded Barbet, also we will watch Hummingbirds like the Booted Racket-tail, Green Hermit, Speckled Hummingbird, Black-throated Brilliant, Rufous-webbed Brilliant. Stay overnight in a comfortable hotel in Oxapampa. (B, BL, D).

Day 5.    Oxapampa – Villa Rica

There are very good birds in this route, we will stop several times and walk down to visit the coffee plantations and the Oconal lake.

In the way to Villa Rica we will watch the Swallow-tailed Kite, Beryl-spangled Tanager, Bay Antpitta, Golden-headed Quetzal, Olivaceous Greenlet, Red-throated Caracara, Mountain Wren, Red-throated Caracara, Long-tailed Sylph,Black-eared Hemispingus, Beryl-spangled Tanager, White-backed Fire-eye, Blue-and-black Tanager, Red-throated Caracara, White-winged Becard. In the coffee plantations we will be able to find  species like Plain-crowned Spinetail, Black-faced Tanager, Moustached Wren, Cabanis’ Spinetail,Lanceolated Monklet, Creamy-bellied Antwren, Sooty-headed Tyrannulet, Plumbeous-crowned Tyrannulet, Cerulean-capped Manakin, Red-billed Tyrannulet among others. On the Oconal lake we will find the Last Grebe, Purple Gallinule, Blackish Rail, Striated Heron, and other species related to wetlands. Also we will move to La Cumbre, Canal de Piedra and Hacienda El Carmen, on the sorroundings of Cerro el Carmen we can go deep into the trails and seek beautiful species associated to Coffee Plantations like  Plain-crowned Spinetail, Black-faced Tanager, Moustached Wren, Cabanis’ Spinetail, Lanceolated Monklet, Creamy-bellied Antwren, Sooty-headed Tyrannulet, Plumbeous-crowned Tyrannulet, Cerulean-capped Manakin, Red-billed Tyrannulet, Band-bellied Owl, Scissor-tailed Nightjar and others. Also, we will watch many Tanagers and Hummingbirds throughout the day. Stay overnight in a tourist lodge in Villa Rica. (B, BL, D).

Day 6     Villa Rica – Satipo –  Apalla

Departure early in the morning to Apalla. This is a small touristic town on the road to Satipo, that’s the reason why there exists a basic hotel, this town will be used as our Operation Center.

After leaving Villa Rica we will do many stops along the road, this is an excellent site for birding due to the various altitudinal steps.

We will be able to observe species like the Epaulet Oriole, Great Antshrike, Little Ground-Tyrant, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Rusty-fronted Tody-Flycather, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, White-banded Swallow, Black-faced Antbird, Peruvian Warbling-Antbird, Black Caracara, Plain-crowned Spinetail, Black-fronted Nunbird, Plain-crowned Spinetail, Plumbeous Kite, Little Woodpecker, Speckled Chachalaca among others. We will stay at a basic hotel in Apalla. (B, BL, D).

Day 7     Apalla and surroundings

This day will be dedicated to birding on the Apalla sorroundings, on this site we will be able to observe the beautiful Sword-billed Hummingbird, and at night we will go for the spectacular Lyre-tailed Nightjar.

Additionally to these species it is possible to find the White-backed Fire-eye, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Bay Antpitta, Pearled Treerunner, Streaked Tuftedcheek, and other more species. We will stay at a basic hotel in Apalla. (B, BL, D).

Day 8    Apalla – Camino a Andamarca

We will spend all day looking for important species on the road to Andamarca, some of them are not yet recorded by science like Phacellodomus thornbird and the Thryothorus wren also we can find Black-spectacled Brush-Finch a recently recorded species. On the road we will be able to find species like Fire-throated Metaltail, Eye-ringed Thistletail, White-bellied Hummingbird, Striated Earthcreeper, Black-backed Grossbeak, Rusty-fronted Canastero, White-winged Black-Tyrant. In addition we will see a preliminary registered specie called Milpo Tapaculo. We overnight in basic hotel in Apalla.

Dia 9     Apalla – Puente Carrizales – Concepción

We leave early in the morning from Apalla to Concepcion town, we will road a  long way. Before Carrizales bridge we will be able to see Black-capped Donacobius, Rusty Flower-piercer, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Eye-ringed Thistletail, Blackish Rail, Rufous-sided Crake, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Versicoloured Barbet, Torrent Tyrannulet, Red-crested Cotinga y muchos picaflores como el Shining Sunbeam, Giant Hummingbird, Tyrian Metaltai, Fire-throated Metaltail. También se puede observar Crested Quetzal, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Barred Fruiteater, Yellow-throated Tanager, Barred Fruiteater among others species. In the Carrizales bridge surroundings we will search an endemic Eye-ringed Thistletail. Arriving to highlands lakes we will be birding several species as grebes,ducks, gooses and Andean gulls. We overnight in the confortable hotel at Concepcion town. (B, BL, D).

Dia 10    Concepcion – Lima

We leave early from Concepcion to Lima. We will make several stops for birding on the road, Ticlio and surroundings, Marcopomacocha road, and the rest of the way to Santa Eulalia, along this amazing road we can find the endemic White-bellied Cinclodes (E), Eared Dove, Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, Mourning Sierra-Finch, Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch como también a Black-necked Woodpecker(E), Black-winged Ground-Dove, Greenish Yellow-Finch, Bronze-tailed Comet, Oasis Hummingbird, Purple-collared Woodstar, Peruvian Sheartail, Mourning Sierra-Finch, Peruvian Sierra-Finch,  Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch(E), White-winged Cinclodes, Canyon Canastero, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail(E), Streaked Tit-Spinetail, Great Inca-Finch(E), Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Puna Snipe, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe and maybe if we are lucky enough could see the Andean Condor. Arriving to Lima we will go to the airport to take your flight home. (B, L)
